    Kentucky ‘son of a soldier’ enters Kid’s Mullet Champ competition

    FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A Fort Campbell boy will be rocking his famous hairstyle for charity in the 2024 Kids’ Mullet Championship.

    Calvin Johnson made it to eighth place in the competition finals last year, garnering over $1,785 in support of Jared Allen’s Home for Wounded Warriors , which he is competing on behalf of once again this year. The veteran-founded non-profit states that its mission is to provide “mortgage-free, accessible homes to critically wounded combat veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.”

    Calvin said on his Mullet Champ competition profile , “I’ve had [a mullet] for three years now, and it’s been the best years of my life. I fell into the mullet lifestyle after seeing the competition a few years ago and started growing right away!” Calvin also said his dad, who serves in the army, is envious of Calvin’s wicked hairstyle.

    The 2024 Mullet Champ competition officially begins the first round on July 10, with open registration ending on Sunday. Children ages 0–12, teens ages 13–17, and adults aged 18 and up can enter until Sunday, per the competition rules.

    The rankings are a combination of three factors: public and judge votes, celebrity endorsements, and the amount of money raised for Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, which is the competition’s featured non-profit partner organization.

    “This year’s competition is all about celebrating the boldest and most daring hairdos in the nation, with contestants vying for the coveted title of Mullet Champ,” officials said. In addition to the website competition, there will be in-person Mullet Champ events at the Indiana and Illinois State Fairs on July 29 and August 10, respectively.

    The mullets are judged by a hand-selected panel “based on length, style, uniqueness, and showmanship,” per officials.
