Editor's note: This is a developing story that was been updated multiple times since its original publication. The most recent update was about 12:30 p.m. Monday. Later Monday afternoon, Larimer County Sheriff's Office announced that the man who exchanged gunfire with police died from his injuries.

Police say the driver in a single-vehicle crash near City Park exchanged gunfire with responding Fort Collins police officers Sunday, then ran toward nearby Grandview Cemetery, where "more gunfire occurred."

The incident, which began around 12:41 p.m. Sunday, left both an officer and the driver injured, according to a Fort Collins police news release around 4 p.m. Sunday.

While police said the officer is expected to recover, Fort Collins Police Services' director of communications J Gilmore told the Coloradoan she did not have an update on the driver's condition. No civilians were injured in the incident.

Roads in the area were closed much of the evening as the scene was processed. Police shared on X near midnight Sunday that the roads had reopened.

Here's what we know from our conversation with Gilmore, the Fort Collins Police Services news release, and prior Coloradoan reporting.

What Fort Collins police say happened near City Park, Grandview Cemetery Sunday

In their Sunday afternoon news release, police say:

    • Officers responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash near the Bryan Avenue and Mountain Avenue intersection around 12:41 p.m.
    • The driver had a firearm when they got out of the vehicle, and "exchanged gunfire" with officers before running toward Grandview Cemetery.
    • When officers followed the driver into Grandview Cemetery, "more gunfire occured."
    • The police department's Special Weapons and Tactics Unit's armored rescue vehicle helped officers approach the driver, who was injured. In a post on X, police said a suspect had been shot during the incident. When asked by the Coloradoan if she could confirm whether police shot the driver, Gilmore said she could not provide that information.
    • After the driver was rendered aid, he was taken into custody and taken to an area hospital.
    • An officer who was shot was also taken to an area hospital. Police noted that officer is expected to recover.

    No civilians injured

Gilmore told the Coloradoan no civilians were injured in Sunday's shooting and that police say "there's no threat to the community at this time."

    CIRT investigating shooting

The Critical Incident Response Team, a multi-agency team that investigates when an officer fires a weapon in Colorado and someone is killed or injured , has been activated, police said in their later post on X .

Larimer County Sheriff's Office will be the lead investigating agency, according to Fort Collins Police Services' Sunday afternoon news release. Any additional information will be released by the sheriff's office, police said.

CIRT is a multi-agency response team under the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office charged with investigating shootings and incidents resulting in serious injury or death when they involve police.

The 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office expanded its CIRT protocol in August to require law enforcement agencies to consult the district attorney’s office in all cases involving an officer and a member of the public when either party is seriously injured, whether or not a firearm was used, in an effort to be more transparent, according to a news release.

Other cases involving serious injury or death — including in-custody deaths or vehicle crashes — have previously been investigated by CIRT.
