Child clings to life as video is released showing mass shooting in Fort Lauderdale 00:42
FORT LAUDERDALE — Fort Lauderdale police have released surveillance video showing a shooting that two people dead — and three adults and a 2-year-old boy injured — on Monday. The mother of the child was among those killed.
Police told CBS News Miami the shooting happened just before 8 p.m. on Monday. In the video, a silver sedan whips around a corner near the 800 block of Northwest 10th Terrace when one of its doors opens and someone begins shooting.
Before the shooting, Tiarra Holliday, 28, is seen walking across the street, wearing a white T-shirt. When the bullets began flying, she and others ran for cover inside a nearby store.
Officers found Holliday dead at the scene. Her family told CBS News Miami that the loving mother was with her 2-year-old son, Deeago Henry, and was trying to shield and protect him. They were both struck by bullets.
Warning: the video is graphic and viewer discretion is advised.
The boy and three other people were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where one man — Sheldon Lawrence, 45 — died.
On Tuesday, a man and woman were released from the hospital.
The 2-year-old was still hospitalized as of Thursday night. His family said he was grazed in the head and put into a medically induced coma before undergoing brain surgery. The family said he has a long recovery ahead.
As the family tries to navigate the boy's future care, they're also planning his mother's funeral.
Casey Liening with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department told CBS News Miami that preliminary information suggested the drive-by shooting was an "isolated incident."
Along with the video, police shared that they had found a vehicle abandoned shortly after the shooting. The suspects, however, are still at large.
