Several South Florida Sun Sentinel journalists won Green Eyeshade Awards from The Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s oldest regional journalism contest.

Photojournalist Amy Beth Bennett won a top award for a photograph of a pro-Palestine marcher who was arrested on the campus of Florida Atlantic University. The same image also won first place for spot news photography. Joe Cavaretta won third place in the same category for coverage of record rainfall in Fort Lauderdale.

“Condo Wars,” a yearlong investigation into condominium boards and homeowners associations, won first place for investigative reporting among large daily newspapers. The team included reporters David Fleshler, Ron Hurtibise and Brittany Wallman, data journalist Danica Jeffries, photojournalists Mike Stocker and Carline, along with editor David Schutz and director of photography Sean Pitts.

Mark Gauert won two first place awards, for travel writing and for humorous commentary that appeared in City & Shore magazine.

The Green Eyeshade Awards recognizes journalistic excellence in print, TV, radio, digital and student divisions in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
