Some kids met their hero Daniel Tiger on the FGCU campus. On a recent Saturday, WGCU held its annual party with PBS called “Be my Neighbor Day.”

    About 400 people turned out.

Areas of the Myra Janco Daniels Public Media Center were divided into “neighborhoods” with themes around art and education, science and the environment and community helpers like public safety. Being neighborly was one of the big ideas.

Headgear was in fashion among the kids.

Plenty of fire hats were on young heads thanks to the San Carlos Park Fire Department. Other kids, among the preschool to-elementary cohort, sported new bicycle helmets, free from (and fitted by) Blue Zones Project Southwest Florida.

Some kids made multi-colored slime. Others made necklaces of straws. Plenty toured the Conservancy of Southwest Florida bus, where they gazed into microscopes and clearly saw the difference between plankton and plastic. Outside was a table by the Naples Zoo, where the shed skin of a Burmese python, a panther skull and a bear claw fascinated quite a few. ¦
