Schools receive third—and potentially final—round of federal funding for homeless students
A pandemic-era program that has pumped $2 million into Montana schools to support students experiencing homelessness is nearing its end date. From the start of the 2023-24 school year to its conclusion, the number of students experiencing homelessness in Kalispell’s public school system jumped from 293 to 365. Assistant Superintendent Sara Cole said the increase reflects a growing trend in her district, one driven primarily by the soaring cost of living in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Martinsdale's Walker Story and Lewistown's Sage Henderson led the way for Montanans on the opening night of the National High School Rodeo Finals on Sunday night, both finishing ninth in their event. Story was ninth in boys cutting with a score of 138, nine points behind Luke Haskell of Payson, Utah, in the top spot. Henderson had a time of 8.52 seconds in goat tying; Drew Ellen Stewart of Normangee, Texas, won in 6.87. A small handful of other Montanans began their weeklong run Sunday night. Motorcyclist dead in Billings after hitting city bus Tuesday evening
BILLINGS, Mont. - The Billings Police Department shared on Tuesday evening that a motorcyclist died after hitting a city MET bus. According to the post from Sgt. Reid, the bus was turning left at 6:33 p.m. headed south onto 15th Street West from Grand Avenue when the motorcycle hit the bus. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.

Laurel Chamber asks for public's help in keeping kids safe at parade
Fourth of July in Laurel, Montana - a small town celebration on the grandest of scales. Thousands of people pour into Laurel for the annual parade, pancake breakfast, Chief Joseph run, vendor and food truck event and, of course, the best fireworks show in the state. Laurel’s Chamber of Commerce handles all but the breakfast and fireworks for the holiday. This massive undertaking rests on the shoulders of Chamber Director, Camilla Story, the Chamber Board of Directors and a handful of volunteers.
USPS opens Big Sky post office
This morning, July 15, the United States Postal Service opened its new post office in Big Sky, the community’s first federally operated post office. The post office is located at 110 Meadow Village Dr., around the corner from the now-retired Big Sky Post Office, which operated for decades under contract with USPS—the old location will keep its P.O. box lobby open through Saturday, July 20, to allow P.O. box-holders to pick up remaining mail.

ASHTON — Idaho State Police is investigating a four-vehicle collision that occurred on US 20 at milepost 354 at 2:47 p.m. on Monday. A white 2011 Ford F150, driven by a 64-year-old male from Lucern Valley, California, and grey 2020 Toyota Tundra, driven by a 45-year-old female from Bozeman, Montana, were traveling eastbound on US 20. A grey 2018 Kia Sportage, driven by a 67-year-old female from St. Anthony, and a grey 2007 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 46-year-old female from St. Anthony, were traveling westbound on US 20.
