STUDENT ARRESTED: 17-year-old brought loaded handgun to Fort Pierce Central High

A 17-year-old student was arrested Wednesday morning for bringing a loaded handgun on the campus of Fort Pierce Central High School, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said.

The teen is a student at Lincoln Park Academy but was attending summer school at Fort Pierce Central High School, Sheriff Keith Pearson said in a reel posted on Facebook.

The student was attending summer school at the time of his arrest, deputies said.

"Staff alerted our deputies that they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from one of the bathrooms," Pearson said in the reel. "Deputies investigated that, looked at surveillance tapes and identified a student. When they made contact with him, they searched him, finding a loaded firearm in his backpack."

The district says no threats were made to the school.

The student will face expulsion.
