A Fort Pierce family is mourning the loss of a couple that died in a July 4th house fire.

The early morning blaze engulfed a home along Avenue O around 2 a.m. and Stacy Cash says his father Robert Cash and his stepmother Charlene Cash were the two bodies pulled from the fire.

“My dad was real good with the community, he was a pastor. He was real good about helping people, he was a mechanic he helped anybody. And he didn’t deserve what happened to him.”

Cash says his father was in his late 80s and his stepmother was in her late 60s. He describes Charlene as an outstanding person who spent her life as a nurse and also helped anybody she could

Firefighters have not yet determined a cause of the fire, but Cash tells CBS 12 News that he believes that he knows the couple could not get out in time.

“What I believed happened the roof caved in from the burning because of the inferno. The fire was so hot that it cremated them.”

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and its fire marshals are investigating.
