FORT PIERCE − Fort Pierce Police are investigating a Tuesday shooting that left a 17-year-old boy dead, a police spokesperson said Wednesday.

Police at 7:17 p.m. Tuesday went to the 1500 block of Avenue K, said April Lee, police spokesperson. She said a 17-year-old boy was struck by gunfire.

He was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce in critical condition. He died at the hospital, Lee stated. The teen's name was not released.

Jennifer Norris, 46, lives in a home just down the street from where the shooting occurred.

In a Wednesday morning interview, Norris said she was in her room and heard gunfire.

“It was like pop, pop, pop, pop,” Norris said.

She pointed to an area about a block or so west of her residence and said police taped off the street in an area where a large tree is on the south side of Avenue K.

She said police quickly arrived at the scene.

“I've only been in this house for about seven months, and this is like the third fatality around this little neighborhood that I've heard of already,” Norris said.

A number of homes appeared to have been struck by bullets. Other residents in the area either did not wish to speak, didn’t see anything or didn’t answer knocks to the door.

Norris said police cars were there and an ambulance and a fire truck came to the scene.

“There's just traffic and people walking from everywhere,” Norris said. “I've never seen nothing like it, you'd think if somebody died ... you'd want to stay out of the mess, but people don't.”

No other information was available Wednesday morning.

Those with information are asked to contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-TIPS or Detective Catalina Osorio-Escobar at 772-979-1429 or COsorio@fppd.org.
