FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A University of Arkansas – Fort Smith student is biking more than 4,000 miles to raise funds and awareness for individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Braxten Martin, a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at the UAFS, has embarked on a cross-country bike journey from Seattle to Washington D.C. to raise funds and awareness for individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Martin is part of Pi Kappa Phi’s philanthropic initiative, the Journey of Hope , which aims to support and empower people with disabilities. Alongside twelve fraternity brothers, Martin will cover over 4,300 miles over the next few weeks, stopping at local YMCA facilities, churches, schools, and other community spaces that donate accommodations for their overnight stays.

“We start our days early and pedal anywhere from 75 to 85 miles daily,” Martin said. “On our rest days, we visit local disability centers and volunteer our time to make a difference in the lives of those we’re riding for.”

Despite minimal training — just two weeks on a stationary bike, including tough terrain simulations — Martin remains focused on his mission.

“It’s challenging but knowing we’re making a difference makes it all worth it,” he said.

Martin emphasized that donations are crucial to their cause, expressing hope that his efforts will showcase Arkansas’s support for individuals facing disabilities of all kinds.

“This journey isn’t just about the miles we cover,” Martin reflected. “It’s about showing that Arkansas cares deeply about inclusion and support for our fellow citizens.”

Martin’s ride began in Seattle and will end in Washington D.C., symbolizing a cross-country effort to promote disability awareness and raise funds for programs that enhance the lives of those with disabilities.
