FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Fort Smith residents are about to be paying more for water soon.

The city’s board of directors approved a water rate increase on July 11, and it went into effect on August 1.

Customers will begin seeing an increase in their September bills. The city says this will help cover things like operating and maintenance costs and help pay off existing debt.

The increase will only affect the water portion of your bill. Sewer and solid waste portions will stay the same.
