Child's legacy lives on with annual toy drive
For the past several years, Rio Rancho parents Patricia and Anthony Dimas have hosted an annual toy drive in honor of their son. This year makes seven. Elijah-Jay Dimas passed at the age of 10 in 2018 after a 4 1/2-year battle with Ewing sarcoma, a bone cancer.
Hospital opens new delivery unit
The delivery was delayed somewhat, but Gila Regional Medical Center opened its new Women and Newborn Services Unit with a baby shower-themed opening Wednesday. The completion of the project, funded by $2 million in capital outlay from the state, was delayed somewhat by plan revision approvals, but it will be open for patients on Friday, said Jasmine Parra, director of the unit. Construction on renovations to the former Maternal Child Department started in January.
More Little Walnut work on the way
The next phase of improvements to Little Walnut Road will get underway in about a month, thanks to a bid awarded by the Silver City Town Council at their meeting Tuesday. The council voted to award phase four of the Little Walnut project to Deming Excavating Inc. for $2.9 million, which includes a little more than $223,000 in gross receipts taxes to be paid by the town.
Connie Mack World Series teams arrive at Civic Center
FARMINGTON – With the 2024 Connie Mack World Series just hours away, teams from across America arrived via police escort Thursday afternoon at the Farmington Civic Center. Shortly after the host Frackers team arrived for introductions and meetings with local CMWS officials, representatives from the Texas Twelve Red Sox and Midland (Ohio) Redskins met with host families and coaches as the annual tournament gets underway Friday across Farmington.

Bernalillo County – Assessor Damian Lara has been chosen to address the International Association of Assessing Officers 2024 legal Seminar on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Aztec Police Department will get a boost when reserve officers enter the force through a new program approved in June by the City Commission. The program, which will begin in earnest next month, is designed to supplement present police ability with trained volunteers, explained Police Chief Bill Smith Sr. Applications for the reserve are now being taken by the police department and program coordinator Officer Richard Mahan. Qualifications include being a resident of Aztec, being at least 21 years of age and having a record clear of any felony arrest or any misdemeanor arrests that may fall under “moral turpitude.”
