SHALIMAR — Much-needed changes are coming to Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport . On Tuesday, the Okaloosa County Commission approved a $16.6 million expansion to the baggage claim area.
Here is what you need to know:
Project overview
According to Airport Director Tracy Stage, with the new baggage claim area, officials expect to add approximately 14,724 square feet to the east end of the existing terminal and renovate 12,732 square feet of existing space.
Once completed, baggage claim devices will be increased from two to four and passenger circulation space will be increased. The new claim areas will be accessible 360 degrees around the carousel and spread passengers throughout the floor.
Further additions included in the project include rental car office space, wheelchair and luggage space, relocated airline baggage storage offices, overhead LED signs and upgrades to the HVAC system and emergency generator capacity to support existing and new equipment.

Rycon Construction Inc. was awarded a $14,567,777 contract for the project. According to Stage, Rycon was the lowest responsive bidder out of three companies that had interest, with Rycon coming in 17% below the project estimate set by the engineer.
The commission also approved a $1.071 million contract with Infrastructure Consulting and Engineering for construction phase services.
The project will receive funding from multiple sources, including FAA grants and passenger and customer facility charges. The airport plans to contribute $1.017 million in matching funds.
Project timeline
Construction is expected to begin following the end of the peak summer travel season. According to county documents, construction will last 450 days once the notice to proceed is issued.
