FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – As a do-it-all guard for Columbia City, Derek Hinen was a standout player on the Highlight Zone before graduating high school in 2013. After a college career that included stops at both Huntington University and Saint Francis, the northeast Indiana native will now find himself a Highlight Zone regular once again this coming basketball season – albeit, from the sideline.

Hinen was tabbed at the new head boys basketball coach at Leo last month . He heads back to the 260 after spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Fairfield. Hinen went 43-31 during his time leading the Falcons, including posting a 20-7 mark last season.

Hinen takes over at Leo for longtime coach Cary Cogdell, who spent 20 seasons leading the Purple Pride before stepping down in April . Cogdell went 282-185 at Leo, going 12-13 this past year.
