FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – June 2024 is in the books and it was ultimately a warmer and drier month compared to average. There has been no lack of above average warmth so far this year, but the drier weather in June was a notable shift from our very soggy spring.

Spring 2024 was one of the soggiest and warmest ever

Our June 2024 will most be remembered for the long duration early season heatwave that happened in the middle of the month. Just look at all those 90 degree days! We ended up 2.7 degrees above average, which is good for the 13th warmest June in Fort Wayne’s history.

All the 90s in the middle of June boosted us up to the 13th warmest June on record in Fort Wayne.

We stacked up a total of eight 90 degree June days, which is the most since 2022. We doubled our monthly average, but still came well short of our 1934 record.

We doubled our average number of June 90 degree or higher days.

This June saw seven straight days in the 90s. With records dating back to 1897, this is good for the 4th longest streak in June’s history in Fort Wayne. Our record is ten days set back in 1994. We also saw three days at 95 or above, which is good for the 3rd longest streak in June’s history in Fort Wayne. We came only one day shy of our record set back in both 1994 and 1934.

Both of these temperature streaks nearly set June records!

June 17th’s high temperature of 97 degrees is also the hottest we’ve been in Fort Wayne since May 28th, 2018!

June 17th, 2024, was the hottest day since May 28th, 2018.

Also making history, was four record highest low temperatures in a row this month, which has not happened since 1936.

Four straight record warm nights were observed in June 2024, tying a 1936 record.

While our temperatures stole the big headlines, it was also a drier month than average. We saw 2.63 inches of rain, which is 1.85 inches below average. We saw the 38th driest June in Fort Wayne’s history.

June’s rainfall was below average by nearly two inches, placing us as the 38th driest June in Fort Wayne’s history.

Transitioning into July, we typically do not see temperatures move very much. High temperatures are in the 80s and lows are in the 60s on average to begin and end the month. The hottest days of the summer usually come in July, so you will want to be prepared for the heat. Our average rainfall total in Fort Wayne drops down to just over four inches.

Temperatures stay elevated all throughout July and we see our fair share of rainfall.

We could use some good soaking rainfall in July, as abnormally dry soils can be found across the area. This July, there are equal chances we’ll see above average beneficial rain or stick with the more below average trend that has been observed to begin Meteorological Summer. However, we still maintain above average temperature probabilities into July, which has been the trend for the entire year so far.

We’ll cross our fingers for more substantial amounts of rain in July to help alleviate our dry soils. Considering we did not see a daily rainfall over an inch in Fort Wayne in June, we certainly need more rain.
