FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The week of the 4th of July is always one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

As drivers prepare to hit the road, they’ll find fewer construction restrictions on I-69 through the Fort Wayne corridor, according to Sgt. Brian Walker from the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne post.

Walker said they anticipate Wednesday being a busy travel day. Before then, the intention was to open up some construction zones as much as possible to help keep motorists moving; However, they would still be marked as construction zones and the speed limit will stay at 55 miles per hour.

“We still have obstructions in those construction areas and we still have things to be concerned about, and we need to make sure people are giving themselves the proper amount of time to react to dangers that may come their way in a construction zone, and we need to do that with slower speeds – giving people more time to pay attention,” Walker explained.

He wants drivers to remember to buckle up, make sure their passengers are buckled up, put their phones down, and remember to obey Indiana’s ‘Move Over and Slow Down’ law for emergency vehicles, two trucks, or any disabled vehicle on the side of the road.

Walker also wants to remind drivers to have a plan in place before celebrating to avoid impaired driving.

While the legal limit is .08% BAC, Walker said impairment starts well before that .08% threshold.
