CASTIONS DI STRADA, Italy (WANE) – Back in 2020 Fort Wayne native and Bishop Dwenger graduate Andrea Filler suited up for Italy at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. With softball not a part of the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Filler is doing the next best thing while suiting up for Team Italy again.

Filler is playing second baseball at the 2024 WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup, which is actually being hosted by Italy. In addition to the Italians, the field includes teams from the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, China, the Netherlands, and Japan, Australia.

As of Wednesday night Italy had completed group play, going 1-2 with a 6-0 win against China that saw Filler mash a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Super Round is scheduled for Thursday and Friday with the World Championship Final & Bronze Medal games set for Saturday.

Filler, who played college softball at Boston College and Northwestern, spoke with WANE about her family’s Italian heritage and how she came to a member of Italy’s national softball squad prior to the last Olympics .
