FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne Police officers surrounded a home on Fort Wayne’s north side Tuesday because of a man armed with a bow who allegedly shot arrows at his ex-girlfriend.

Aaron Vendrely, 47, could face charges of felony intimidation and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

Police responded to the 500 block of Ward Drive, off Coldwater Road, around noon. They were called to the scene for a “family fight party armed” call, according to the FWPD police log.

A woman had called 911 saying her ex-boyfriend was trying to shoot her, and he allegedly had already shot two arrows through a door to try to get to her, according to details released Wednesday by FWPD. The caller said the man threatened to shoot anyone who would come to the home, and he also “threatened suicide by cop,” according to the release.

Officers arrived at the home and were able to get the woman out of harm’s way uninjured.

When police began to call for Vendrely to come outside peacefully and unarmed, he instead came out with multiple knives and a large machete, FWPD said. Vendrely then went back inside and returned with two dogs. Officers told him to put the dogs back inside along with the knives, which he apparently still had.

Vendrely put away the dogs and eventually walked to the end of his driveway, putting down “several articles and knives,” according to the release.

Vendrely allegedly stopped complying after that, though, and police used a non-lethal munition to get him into custody.

Vendrely’s charges are pending his release from a hospital.
