    Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for president? Here’s what Texas voters said in new poll

    A new poll has former President Donald Trump winning Texas by 5 percentage points in his bid against Vice President Kamala Harris.

    Trump, a Republican, is up against Harris, a late-entry to the presidential race after President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid.

    According to the poll from the Texas Politics Project at The University of Texas at Austin, Trump has the support of 49% of Texas voters to Harris’ 44%. Three percent opted for someone else and 4% said they hadn’t given it enough thought to have an opinion.

    The poll surveyed 1,200 registered Texas voters between Aug. 23-31, and has a 2.83% margin of error.

    The race is tighter in Texas than the one between Biden and Trump, according to a June poll from The Texas Politics Project that had Trump up by 7 or 9 percentage points, depending on whether third party candidates were listed as an option.

    Trump won Texas in 2016 against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by about 9 points . While he lost the overall race, he won Texas against Joe Biden in 2020 by about 6 points .

    The latest poll found that Democrats are more enthusiastic about 2024 election than they were a few months ago: 79% said they’re extremely or very enthusiastic about voting in the November election, compared to 61% in the June poll.

    Republican’s enthusiasm has waned some, the poll shows, with 73% saying they’re extremely or very enthusiastic compared to 77% in June.

    Seventy two percent of those polled this Biden made the right decision exiting the presidential race, including 89% of Democrats surveyed.

    Of everyone polled, 49% believe Harris is a stronger candidate than Biden, while 15% say she’s a weaker candidates and 32% say there’s no real difference. Four percent didn’t know or didn’t have an opinion.
