Several North Texas law enforcement agencies were involved in a standoff Thursday night with a suspect who locked himself inside a Sansom Park home after injuring an elderly man, police said.

Sansom Park officers responded about 11:30 p.m. to the residence, in the 3000 block of Biway Street, in response to a report of a physical disturbance and threats made by the suspect, according to a police news release.

The first officers on scene wee told that the suspect had possibly injured the elderly man, who was lying on the kitchen floor, while another man had locked himself in a bedroom to get away from the suspect. The suspect, who was believed to have a gun, also was accused of making threats to a witness outside the home who had attempted to check on the elderly man, police said.

Police said the information they received “raised concerns of a hostage situation,” and the department called for assistance from other agencies.

Officers devised a tactical plan to rescue the injured man by entering the back door to the kitchen, police said. After bringing the man to safety, the officers retreated outside and took cover.

A hostage negotiator from the River Oaks Police Department attempted to communicate with the suspect by using a loudspeaker, but he would not comply with commands, according to the release.

A drone from the White Settlement Police Department was sent into the home, and officers used the footage to plan a second tactical entry, during which they detained the suspect without incident, police said.

The suspect’s name, age and potential charges have not been released.

The River Oaks Police Department, Lakeside Police Department, White Settlement Police Department, Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, Sansom Park Fire Department and MedStar Mobile Healthcare assisted Sansom Park police during the incident.
