Of course, Texas is known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, which includes brisket tacos and queso cheese dip. However, two Texas Mexican spots made Yelp’s list of the 25 best Mexican food spots in the country .
Yelp compiled their list based on total rankings and reviews from Jan. 1, 2001, and Feb. 14, 2024. They limited it to two restaurants per state.
The list targets “a focus on freshness, authentic Mexican recipes, and a blend of old traditions with new techniques,” says Yelp. Dishes such as birria tacos or tamales and regional favorites like Oaxacan or Sonoran styles were showcased throughout.
Check out the two Texas spots that made the best 2024 Best Mexican food spots list.
They offer an extensive menu of tamale selections. You can grab tamales a la carte (for $2) or in packs of 12. They offer pork, beef, hatch pork, chicken, habanero pork, or black bean flavors.
You can also turn your tamale into a Tommy Bowl or Tamale Pie , two popular items among Yelp reviewers. The Tommy Bowl includes rice, queso, TX beef chili, tamales, cheese and pico de gallo atop one or two tamales of your choice. The Tamale Pie is like a Frito pie with Fritos, TX beef chili, queso and your choice of one or two tamales.
The restaurant has multiple locations around the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex.
Grapevine: 1689 W. Northwest Highway.

Sonoran hot dogs originated from Sonora, Mexico but are very popular in Arizona. The hot dog is famously bacon wrapped with a specific bolillo or birote style buns. T-Loc’s imports their buns daily from Tucson.
The dogs are topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, and classic hot dog sauces. “The hot dog [was] sweet, spicy, salty, and savory. It was absolutely delicious. You would think having all of those toppings on a hot dog would be too much, but it hit the spot. This place has won awards, and it shows.” says Yelp reviewer Delanie K.
For those who don’t enjoy hot dogs, T-Loc’s also offers the famous Carne Asada burrito, specialty ranch fries, La Sonora queso dip, and a breakfast burrito.
The food truck is parked at 5000 Burnet Rd., Austin. Its Instagram is updated with daily information and hours. However, it is usually open Tuesday through Thursday for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On Saturdays, the restaurant is open for lunch from noon until 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays, it is open for lunch from noon to 2:30 p.m. On Mondays, it is closed.
