Here’s why National Taco Day is always on a Tuesday. Celebrate with $1-$1.50 deals

The first National Taco Day 15 years ago was a morning of celebration.

It featured long lines wrapping around restaurants near college campuses, and thousands of Baja-style tacos with cayenne pepper sauce.

Now, America is close to reaching the promised nirvana of taco trucks on every corner.

But we still pause reverently one day every October to give thanks for the glory of the taco.

This year, National Taco Day has come home to Taco Tuesday.

The Oct. 1 celebration will be the first anchored forevermore on the same weekday instead of floating throughout the week.

This has been achieved thanks to the hard legal work by California-based Taco Bell, which finally offered a credible taco with its roast chicken and tomatillo-avocado green salsa.

Taco Bell will offer rewards members 10 different $1 specials — one each hour — from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are other specials all month, including $1 classic tacos on Oct. 22.

▪ Also, Arlington is wrapping up its annual #SaveTheTacos promotion.

Voting ends Sept. 30 for the best of 12 tacos, including an antelope-mushroom taco from Cut & Bourbon, a jerk shrimp taco from M’Jay’s House of Smoke and a falafel taco from Prince Lebanese Grill. See arlington.org .

At last count, the leaders are the Baja shrimp taco from Tom’s Burgers & Grill, the mushroom-poblano champiqueso at Papaya and the pork belly taco at Rocketbelly.

Here’s a look at other Taco Day deals:

▪ The Fort Worth-born Fuzzy’s Taco Shop chain, now owned by California-based IHoP, will offer $1.50 original tacos.

Yes, there’s a limit. It’s 15.

So go all-out. Choose 15 tacos with brisket, steak, ground beef, grilled or shredded chicken, cod, carnitas or veggies, topped with fresh veggies and Fuzzy’s signature feta cheese and garlic sauce.

Of course, if 15 tacos just aren’t enough, you could always go get more at another of the 16 Fort Worth-area Fuzzy’s.

▪ The Austin-based Chuy’s Mexican Food chain is now owned by a Florida company.

But it’s still your stop for $1 tacos on Oct. 1.

That’s only for Chuy’s simple beef tacos or soft tacos, $1 with any entree.

Chuy’s has locations in central and far north Fort Worth, south Arlington, Hudson Oaks and Southlake, with locations planned in southwest Fort Worth, Burleson and Mansfield .

(This is not related to the small, local Chuy’s Restaurant chain in suburban Fort Worth.)

▪ The Georgia-owned On The Border Restaurants, like Fuzzy’s founded in North Texas, are running a $10 “endless tacos” promotion that ends Oct. 13.

That’s a choice of chicken or beef tacos, or for $13, brisket or Southwest chicken tacos.

On the Border has 11 Fort Worth-area locations.

▪ Taco Cabana, founded in San Antonio, is offering $1 bean tacos and $2 beef or chicken tacos for all patrons, plus a buy-one-get-one deal for rewards members.

Taco Cabana has 10 locations in the Fort Worth area.
