Homicide detectives have linked the February killing of an Arlington man to a suspect who is serving a prison sentence for an unrelated crime, Arlington police said on Oct. 4.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for 25-year-old Rondre Mayberry, who now faces a murder charge in the shooting death of 51-year-old Ricardo Oliveros .

Oliveros was found lying on the ground near his pickup truck in the 2200 block of Remynse Drive on the night of Feb. 13. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Surveillance video from a nearby school showed the victim pull up to the scene in his pickup. The shooter, who was on foot, walked up to the vehicle, police said. Moments later, the video showed the suspect fire one shot and take off running. Oliveros got out of his truck and collapsed on the ground.

Additional footage from a nearby business captured the shooter fleeing the area, police said.

Investigators found a shell casing at the shooting scene and entered it into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. In June, detectives received “a hit” on the shell casing from the ballistics database, which matched it with a handgun Mayberry was carrying when he was arrested for displaying the weapon during an argument at an apartment complex on Forest Hollow Lane, police said.

Police Department personnel test-fired the gun for further analysis and confirmed a match to the evidence from the homicide scene, according to the release.

Mayberry is serving a five-year sentence at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison in Abilene for an unrelated 2024 conviction, police said in a news release. Arlington detectives tried to interview him about Oliveros’ killing, but he declined to speak with them and requested an attorney.

Police also obtained a search warrant for Mayberry’s cellphone records and mapped the location of his phone, showing that it pinged at the homicide scene about one minute before the fatal shot was fired, the release states.

“This case truly took a team effort to solve,” Police Chief Al Jones said. “Had it not been for the outstanding and meticulous police work conducted by our Homicide Unit, Patrol Bureau, Traffic Division, and Crime Analyst Unit, we would not be in the position to file criminal charges in this case and to provide justice to Mr. Olivero’s family. I’m incredibly proud of their dedication and efforts.”

Detectives haven’t found any evidence that the victim and suspect knew each other, and they said a motive for the shooting remains unclear.
