Fort Worth isn’t considered one of the safest cities in America, a new ranking says.

Personal finance company WalletHub just released its list of the safest cities in America , and South Burlington, Vermont, took the top spot, while Burlington, Vermont, came in at No. 4.

WalletHub said the list was compiled based on data on traffic fatalities and assaults, unemployment rates, and the number of uninsured people.

More than 180 American cities were analyzed by experts using 41 variables related to home and community safety, financial safety, and natural disaster risk.

No Texas cities ranked in the top 20.

“When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate, or risk of natural disasters. The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said. “Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness.”

Where did Fort Worth rank for safety?

The study’s data set included the number of assaults and traffic fatalities per capita, the percentage of the uninsured population, and unemployment rates.

A 100-point scale was used to grade each metric, with 100 being the highest level of safety.

South Burlington was ranked the safest city in America, while Memphis, Tennessee, was ranked the least safe.

Fort Worth was ranked No. 121 on the list, with a score of 84 for home and community safety, 152 for financial safety, and 177 for natural disaster risk.

The city was given an overall score of 54.64.

On the brighter side of the study, Fort Worth ranked fourth among the cities with the fewest hate crimes, following Corpus Christi, which ranked third.

Dallas ranked in the top five of the study for cities with the most uninsured population. Fort Worth ranked higher than San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Houston in that category.

What do FBI statistics show about Fort Worth’s safety?

The FBI’s Crime Data Explorer indicates that in 2022 Fort Worth had fewer violent crimes than more populous Texas cities, according to the most recent available data.

Violent crimes, according to FBI data, include four types of offenses: rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder, and non-negligent manslaughter.

The FBI received 502 reports of violent crimes from the Fort Worth Police Department for every 100,000 residents in 2022.

The number slightly increased in 2023 to 506.
