The Benbrook Bobcats have not had a 7-0 high school football season in the school’s history. Their 28-24 victory over Godley on Oct. 18 at Clark Stadium kept their undefeated season alive.

“I am so super proud of these kids,” Benbrook head coach Cody Slater said. “They have fought a lot of years; we fought through a lot of turmoil and tribulation to get to this point, and these seniors on senior night to come and get another victory -- we aren’t satisfied yet.”

Benbrook started the scoring of the night with a touchdown from Kade Cross with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter. Cross was named the offensive player of the game because of his scoring effort on the field.

“Our saying is to get better every week we are going to put in that work.” Cross said. “7-0 is awesome, but we want to go 8-0 we want to go 9-0 we want to go deep in the playoffs. We are going to keep putting in that work, keep getting better. We want it.”

You could see the desire to win from both Benbrook and Godley. After halftime, Godley notched three touchdowns, which put them in the lead, 24-21. But with 2:15 remaining in the game, Benbrook was able to convert on a fourth down and scored a touchdown on the drive.

“The kids came out focused, ready to play and stayed focused at the end to find a way to get the ballgame won,” Slater said.

These two teams had a close matchup last season as well. Godley won that game 31-28. But this season, it was Benbrook’s turn to win.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have a good week, we were a little lackadaisical in our performance I think we took a little bit for granted,” Godley head coach Danny Dudgeon said.

The Bobcats still have two of the toughest opponents in District 4 4A-2 left to face. They will travel to Hillsboro Oct. 25 to play the Eagles and will face off against Glen Rose on Nov. 1.

“We are not really looking ahead,” Slater said. “We are going to celebrate this one tonight, but tomorrow we are going to focus on Hillsboro and try to go 1-0 next week.”

Godley’s next matchup will be against Fort Worth Dunbar on Oct. 25, where the hope is to pick up the first district win of the season.
