School police officer shoots at driver and chases him, then lies about it, TX cops say

A police officer for a Texas school district is accused of shooting at another driver, and chasing after him, in an apparent road rage attack, investigators say and outlets report.

Joseph Andrew Shreve was arrested Oct. 17 on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — roughly a month after the alleged incident, court records show.

At about 4:30 p.m. Sept. 18, El Paso police officers responded to a call to “assist an outside agency with an officer-involved shooting ” on the city’s east side, the department said in an Oct. 22 news release.

Though the release doesn’t specify what “outside agency” was involved, Shreve is listed as an El Paso Independent School District police officer on the district’s website. Local news outlets also report that Shreve is an EPISD officer.

After arriving at the scene, Shreve told officers that a truck rear-ended his vehicle “in a manner that placed him in fear for his life,” according to the El Paso Police Department. He opened fire on the other motorist — a 32-year-old man — and also pursued him, police said.

While chasing the truck , Shreve put out a call on his EPISD radio, but gave up the pursuit when a supervisor told him to stop, according to documents obtained by KFOX.

As detectives looked into the incident, they “determined that Shreve’s account of what happened was inconsistent” with the evidence, police said.

There was no damage to the back of Shreve’s vehicle, indicating he hadn’t been rear-ended, investigators said, but they discovered four bullet holes in the truck, and the shots had been fired from behind it, KFOX reported.

Investigators say the two men were involved in a road rage incident, and Shreve’s life was not in danger, the outlet reported.

Shreve was released on a $250,000 bond Oct. 17, the same day of his arrest, the El Paso Times reported.

Neither Shreve nor the other driver were injured, police told the outlet.

McClatchy News reached out to El Paso ISD for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
