Paw Patrol! How this Tarrant sheriff’s deputy saved eight puppies on a triple-digit day

On Sunday, Sheriff’s Deputy Haley Drew responded to a call about eight puppies locked in a carrier and abandoned in a field in southwest Tarrant County as the temperature reached nearly 100 degrees.

She was reunited with them Thursday at the Chuck Silcox Animal Care & Control Center in Fort Worth, which will be housing the puppies until they are adopted.

“It feels good to see them in much better shape and hopefully they all get adopted,” Drew said while playing with the puppies, estimated to be 2 months old.

Drew said the puppies were in bad shape, and one was on the brink of death.

Drew, an animal lover with a 235-pound Irish wolfhound named Finley at home, said it was hard not to bring a puppy home. But she’s glad her colleague, Deputy Collin Stephenson, adopted one.

In her eight years with the Sheriff’s Office, Drew said she often responds to animal calls — often loose livestock.

The team at the animal shelter taking care of the puppies said they named them all after chips and crackers: Lays Potato, Cheez-It, Cheetos, Doritos, Fritos, Pringles and Ruffles.

Drew said she’s loved dogs since she was a child, beginning with a golden retriever named Murphy her family had when she was a child.

Seven of the eight collie-shepherd puppy mixes will be available soon, and a spokesperson for the shelter said those interested in adopting should reach out by email or check the shelter’s website .

“I imagine they’re going to get a really happy ending, which is great,” Drew said.
