North Texas residents feel tremors of magnitude 4.9 West Texas earthquake 200 miles away

Some residents in the Fort Worth area report feeling tremors from a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that rattled West Texas on Monday night.

“Thought I was trippin. I swear I felt it here in Fort Worth,” a woman posted on social media.

“I am in an apartment in the medical district in Fort Worth and wasn’t sure why I was feeling a strange shaking although very mild while sitting on the couch,” another woman said. “And I am on the 4th floor.”

Someone in far north Fort Worth said they felt the aftershock and posted tongue-in-cheek about first thinking the shaking came from “paranormal activity.”

Other North Texas residents reported feeling tremors in Dallas, Bedford, Haltom City, North Richland Hills, Mineral Wells and Decatur.

“Felt my sofa shaking around 1040pm..thought my dog was scratching or shaking I get up and she was sleep ..my sofa was still shaking,” a man who lives in the Euless area posted.

The 4.9 earthquake, classified as light on the Richter Scale , occurred about 10 miles northeast of Hermleigh in Scurry County at 10:38 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey . Hermleigh is around 200 miles west of Fort Worth.

Two aftershocks, with a 4.4 and 3.1 magnitude followed at 10:46 p.m. and 11:56 p.m., according to the Geological Survey.

According to Lubbock’s KLBK, Monday’s earthquake tied with another 4.9 quake that hit West Texas in July 2022 for the 8th strongest recorded in Texas history .
