Instagram reportedly explores real-time integration of Spotify

Instagram might be getting a bit more rhythm.

A mobile developer says they have spotted a new feature that would let you share what you’re listening to on the social network. Alessandro Paluzzi discovered the feature, which would be shared via notes.

The Note featuring the song would appear at the top of the user’s profile picture, letting friends and followers listen in.

Meta declined to comment about the report.

Spotify has a similar functionality already live with another social media service. Discord users can link their Spotify account to the chat service and share their favorite songs with friends. The feed in that partnership also shows what’s playing, so friends can add it to their own playlist if they like the song. Spotify is also available on the PlayStation and Xbox.

Spotify is having a banner year on many fronts. The company has avoided the fines Apple has faced in the European Union. It reported record profit in the second quarter, adding 7 million new subscribers in that time period. And its stock is up 81% year to date.

Not everyone is a fan, though. Late last year, Spotify laid off 17% of its global workforce, some 1,500 people. CEO Daniel Ek admitted the move “did disrupt our day-to-day operations more than we expected” in the April. The company also sliced royalties to musicians and publishers by almost 50% earlier this year, according to a lawsuit filed by the group that collects their payments.
