Beshear and KDP both endorse Harris
All across the nation, endorsements are rolling in for Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president. And Kentucky is no exception. (from the Courier-Journal) Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced his “full endorsement” for Vice President Kamala Harris as the next president in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” early Monday.
J.D. Vance: Play-acting at being pro-union
It’s a wonder Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance’s pants didn’t spontaneously combust during his speech accepting the vice-presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention. His remarks were more proof that he’s Donald Trump’s equal as a fraudster and a flimflammer, especially when it comes to working Americans....
Beshear, other Dems speak out on Biden decision
Various Democrats across Kentucky, including Governor Beshear, have issued statements about President Biden’s decision to end his campaign for a second term. President Biden will be remembered as a consequential president. Along with Vice President Harris, he led us through the aftermath of the January 6th attack on our Capitol and steadily steered us out of a global pandemic. He showed up for Kentucky after devastating tornadoes and historic flooding, delivering immediate federal aid that is helping to rebuild our communities. His leadership provided infrastructure investments that are bringing clean drinking water and high speed internet to parts of Kentucky that for far too long had been overlooked and underserved. President Biden came through on the Brent Spence Companion Bridge Project, getting bipartisan funding for a project that had been stalled for years and is a major thoroughfare for national commerce.
Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign
President Joe Biden is ending his campaign for reelection. Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation. Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.
The ‘thin hull’ of our flagship university
It appears that Kentucky’s flagship university has a thin hull. The University of Kentucky’s spokesman took umbrage at a headline that appeared in the July 8 Lexington Herald-Leader: “UK violates public records law twice in records requests about university senate, AG says.”. The headline, the university’s...
On Trump building the New York skyline
Donald Trump built the New York City skyline. This is not the first time that Second Son Eric Trump has credited his father with building New York City’s internationally famous skyline. Each time the backlash has been great. But pity poor Eric Trump. He’s terrible at math, just like the vast majority of Republicans.
School vouchers were supposed to save taxpayer money. Instead they blew a massive hole in Arizona’s budget.
Written by Eli Hagar. Originally published by ProPublica. In 2022, Arizona pioneered the largest school voucher program in the history of education. Under a new law, any parent in the state, no matter how affluent, could get a taxpayer-funded voucher worth up to tens of thousands of dollars to spend on private school tuition, extracurricular programs or homeschooling supplies.
Voting rights at risk after Supreme Court makes it harder to challenge racial gerrymandering
Two recent Supreme Court rulings on congressional redistricting will have starkly different consequences for Black voters in the 2024 election. One ruling boosted Black voting power in Louisiana, while another decision upheld a South Carolina congressional map that the lower court had declared “illegal racial gerrymandering.”. Despite these seemingly...
Kentucky’s GOP is NOT the party of “fiscal responsibility”
Kimberly and Dr. Clardy share the breaking Kentucky political news of the weak, including a couple of stories that expose the Kentucky GOP as having zero fiscal responsibility, then we have a great interview for you: Molly Gene Crain, the democratic candidate for Kentucky’s 27th Senate District.
Real hillbillies like me don’t trust JD Vance. You shouldn’t trust him either.
It’s easy to understand why “Hillbilly Elegy,” the 2016 memoir by JD Vance, piqued the interest of the American people. It recycles a narrative America has relied on for a century to sleep soundly despite the everyday horrors of our society: Rich people do well because they are morally better than the poor.
The Far Right must think marriage is terrible
Don’t listen to what the Far Right’s words say; pay attention to what their policies say. The Far Right claims that it’s devoted to saving marriage. But, in reality, they must think that marriage — at least as they envision it — to be so appalling that women would succumb to it if only all their other options are eliminated. That’s a pretty dismal view of marriage!
Project 2025 will affect every part of life. Even weather updates
A lot of disaster is packed into the 900+ pages of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025. Between the scheme to turn the federal government into the servant of an imperial president, and the plan to force Christian nationalism into every aspect of American life, it’s easy to get lost in the details.
Hate speech and kernels of corn
At a recent political event, as we were mingling before the program started, a lady handed me an object she had found on her driveway, and asked me if I had ever seen anything like it. It was a baggie with some corn kernels in the bottom, and a folded-up flyer inside.
Majority of voters think justices Thomas and Alito should be impeached
The U.S. Supreme Court is facing a legitimacy crisis. Previous Data for Progress polling has found that voters are concerned by the power of unelected judges and think that the Supreme Court should follow an enforceable code of conduct. When asked about different approaches to a code of conduct, 73% of likely voters said that the Supreme Court should be required to follow the same ethical code as other federal judges, while only 17% of likely voters supported allowing the Supreme Court to create its own code of ethics.
University president defends multicultural religious, social, and academic groups on campus
FRANKFORT — For almost 90 minutes on Tuesday, Kentucky lawmakers who tried to ban diversity, equity and inclusion in Kentucky’s colleges were told why such programs were needed in higher education. Yet, one legislator said DEI programs “segregate” students. Among presenters were two university presidents —...
Beshear says federal government should reclassify marijuana to recognize its medical uses
In a Wednesday letter sent to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he supports reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule I controlled substance to Schedule III. That would move marijuana from a DEA designation that says it has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for...
