People, get ready for more fraud from Donald J. Trump
People, we need to start getting ready now. No, not about a slew of dismally weak delaying tactics being filed by Trump’s increasingly less qualified revolving door of lawyers. No, not about more attacks on the Capitol when Trump inevitably loses the 2024 election. No, not about casting gold-plated...
Does MAGA Mike Johnson’s election prove all the GOP has now is hate?
The election of Louisiana’s Mike Johnson as House Speaker proves the premise that all the GOP has left are Donald Trump and hate. As Congressman Jamie Raskin told reporters yesterday:. “Donald Trump has cemented his control over the Republican conference in the House of Representatives. He has a stranglehold...
Who is Mike Johnson? New U.S. House speaker belongs to GOP’s religious conservative wing
Before a relatively short time in elected office, new U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana was a constitutional lawyer deeply involved in religious causes. Prior to a short stint in the Louisiana legislature, Johnson spent two decades as a public interest lawyer mainly representing clients in so-called religious liberty litigation, he said in an interview with C-SPAN shortly after joining Congress in 2017. He worked in private practice for the Kitchens Law Firm in North Louisiana, and also did work for the conservative Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom, according to a 2015 article in the New Orleans Time-Picayune.

Beshear defends pandemic work as Cameron cites learning loss, makes false claim about founder of Planned Parenthood
In their next-to-last debate before the Nov. 7 election, Gov. Andy Beshear defended his response to the Covid-19 pandemic against criticism from Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Appearing for an hour on KET, the candidates also debated each other’s positions on abortion, and Cameron made a false claim about the founder of Planned Parenthood.
Would Daniel Cameron really have rolled the dice with Kentuckians lives?
A month ago, on Sept. 17, I had a terrifying car accident in southern Illinois. It was a sunny, Sunday afternoon. I was returning home to Kentucky following my 40-year high school reunion in Missouri. I was alone. And I was driving about 50 mph when a woman made an illegal turn in front of me. I hit her at full speed.

Cameron blending bigotry and bonkers
Remember in the first gubernatorial debate when GOP hopeful Daniel Cameron said the election boiled down to "crazy versus normal"?Of course the attorney general meant Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear was nuts. But a new anti-Beshear ad, doubtless approved by Team Cameron, suggests it's the other way around.
The latest media fail
If I were to tally all of the faults of the modern-day media, be they print, broadcast, or streaming, I would have to be the late, great A.J. Liebling and have my own column in The New Yorker. Not that I am worthy to shine the man’s shoes even. But still.
Many rural counties are poorly equipped to deal with rising gun homicides – especially those in the South
Homicides involving guns are often considered an urban problem, but rural America has its own firearm traumas that few communities have the resources to address effectively. “Nationwide, rural gun homicides have risen, and, in some areas, outpaced their urban counterparts. From 2016 to 2020, 13 of the 20 counties with the highest gun homicide rates were in the rural South, according to the Center for American Progress, a policy research institute,” reports Renuka Rayasam for The Daily Yonder.
Bill Straub: A story of a different kind of clash between two state titans, Sen. McConnell and Sen. Paul
While wars rage in Ukraine, Gaza and other hot spots around this weary globe, a clash of a different, lower sort is shaping up, centered in my old Kentucky home between a pair of Republican titans – Sen. Mitch McConnell and Sen. Rand Paul. There is, to his credit,...
What will Americans do when birth control is illegal?
Last year, all three candidates in the Republican race for Michigan Attorney General proudly confirmed that they believed the 1965 Supreme Court case Griswold v Connecticut was “wrongly decided” on privacy grounds and that it was an infringement on a state’s right to imprison women, regardless of marital status, who use birth control.
The “liberal elitist” lie of the GOP
Republicans love to pin the “liberal elitist” tail on the Democratic donkey. Murray State University historian Brian Clardy pleads guilty, with a caveat. The liberal Democrat admits he’s an elitist if that means “that we try to read; that we try to stay on top of political, cultural, financial, historical and societal trends; that we try to stay informed; and that we are accepting of other cultures and people who work, act, pray and worship differently from us.”
