Is Andy Beshear musing about possibilities ahead? The White House?
James Carville, who knows a little something about political talent (see Clinton, Bill) thinks he’s found a prospect ready for the big leagues, a man he calls “a good friend” – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. James, a friendly acquaintance, although I haven’t seen him much since...
British LGBTQ+ ‘Unity’ train is union built and union crewed
YORK, England – June is Pride Month in the United Kingdom, too. But in January, the TransPennine Express railway company unveiled its “Nova I ‘Unity’” train (union crewed) as “a beacon of hope for the diverse communities TPE serves,” according to a TPE news release, which explained that the sleek, 125-m.p.h. passenger train’s debut kicked off the “first ever ‘TPE Week of Inclusion’ and partnership with The Proud Trust.”
Feeling stuffy in that echo chamber?
Last Friday, I ran into the Anderson County judge-executive at Five Star where we were both getting gas. I had not seen him in a year. He smiled big and said, “Well hello, Miss Carter!,” walked around his truck to give me a hug, and stayed to chat about our families.
Why Trump cannot win: Part Three – the Third Decision
Part One is here. Part Two is here. In order to participate in an election, a citizen of the United States has to make, and act on, three decisions. One must register. This is a decision to participate actively in civic life, and requires making an effort — going to the courthouse, or doing some paperwork, or participating in a registration drive. (I am not among those who think registration should be automatic and effortless. I think anyone who wants to participate in choosing our legislators and governors should be willing to — and capable of — making the required effort.)
The Ten Commandments v. Trump
Honest to gosh, Democrats do not know how to deal with Republican hypocrisy. As everyone knows by now, Louisiana is going to require that every single classroom in the state post a copy of the Ten Commandments. The push-back from progressives has been pathetic. Does this violate the U.S. Constitution?...
Kentucky abortion rights advocate speaks on national television with Vice President Harris
An Owensboro woman who appeared in a pivotal campaign ad for Gov. Andy Beshear’s reelection appeared on national television with Vice President Kamala Harris Monday morning. Hadley Duvall, who has emerged as an abortions rights advocate, sat next to the vice president to discuss abortion access in an exclusive interview that aired on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
Beshear endorses Kate Farrow for House 48
Frankfort, Ky.—Today, Governor Andy Beshear endorsed Kate Farrow’s state legislative campaign in House District 48. “Kate Farrow is running for General Assembly to deliver for Kentucky’s working families and ensure that they’re treated with the dignity they deserve,” said Governor Andy Beshear. “Motivated by a desire to make life better for all Kentuckians, Kate and her common-sense approach to policymaking are needed in Frankfort.”
Why Trump cannot win: Part Two, the rules of the game
Now that we have a clear view of the playing field, aka the electorate, it is pretty obvious what you have to do to win an election:. Notify the members of your party (about one-third of the electorate) that you are running and why. Although they will be predisposed to support you, you need to give them a reason to be enthusiastic about your prospects, as they will be the source of most of your votes, volunteers and money;
Democrats test whether Andy Beshear’s appeal is transferable — in Kentucky and beyond
FRANKFORT — Democrats’ long control of the Kentucky Capitol crumbled in the 21st century. Republicans won veto-proof supermajorities in the legislature and surpassed Democrats in registered voters. And, yet, four of this century’s six races for governor have been won by Democrats — named Beshear. Whether...
Exclusive: DNC moves ahead on all-virtual roll call for Biden presidential nomination
WASHINGTON — The Democratic National Committee has taken a significant step toward formally designating Joe Biden as the party’s presidential nominee before the Democratic convention in August — a move that’s necessary to place him on the Ohio ballot for November’s election, States Newsroom has been told.
Reproductive rights rallies held across the state
Multiple rallies in support of reproductive rights were held on Monday, the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Here are reports on two of them. Doctors, pro-choice advocates rally in Lexington on 2nd anniversary of Dobbs ruling. Monday was the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s...
SCOTUS agrees to hear case challenging laws that ban gender-affirming health care for minors
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday jumped into the fight over transgender rights, agreeing to hear an appeal from the Biden administration seeking to block bans on gender-affirming care like the one in Kentucky. The justices’ action comes as Republican-led states have enacted a variety of restrictions on health care...

Why Trump cannot win: Part One, the playing field
Four years ago I gave to my local Democratic Club a talk titled, “Why Donald Trump Will Not Win the 2020 Election.” Last month I reprised the talk, but this time it was titled, “Why Donald Trump Cannot Win the 2024 Election.” This conclusion is based not on wishful thinking or partisan ardor, but on years of experience as a political operative and consultant.
The upcoming debate debacle
Holy moly! Is the June 27 presidential debate going to be a debacle for former President Donald Trump, or what!. That’s not me as a partisan voicing a wish. No, it’s obvious to anyone who has ever debated anyone over anything. And it’s not even based on Trump’s terrible showings in his previous debates.
Evangelicals, negative partisanship, and Trump
Earlier this year, scholars rated Donald Trump the worst-ever president. Earlier this month, Trump became the only former president to become a convicted felon. Even so, most polls still show a tight reelection race between President Joe Biden and Trump, who is also the only twice-impeached president. More than a...
Think our unemployment benefits are too high? Think again.
Kentucky Repubs continually and consistently try to cut our unemployment benefits, saying they are a disincentive to working. (They’re not.) The truth is, our UI (unemployment insurance) benefits are terrible, especially when compared to other first-world countries. One way to measure that is to note how much of your previous working income you would receive in one year after you became unemployed.
