Heat waves are making restaurant kitchens unsafe. Workers are fighting back.
Last month, Oscar Hernández couldn’t sleep. The cook, who worked at a restaurant located inside of a Las Vegas casino, had found that after coming home from his shifts, his body would not properly cool down. The air conditioning at work had been broken for about four months....
Election workers worry that ‘threats’ task force isn’t enough to keep them safe
Aiming to send a message, the Biden administration recently spotlighted its indictments and convictions in cases involving threats to election officials or workers. But with no letup in reports of attacks, some elections professionals say federal law enforcement still isn’t doing enough to deter bad actors and ensure that those on the front lines of democracy are protected this fall.
Supreme Court ruling may override part of Safer Kentucky Act
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A looming decision by the U.S. Supreme Court may affect how cities in Kentucky address "sleeping in public." In the case, Johnson v. Grants Pass, the Supreme Court will rule whether a city or state can pass laws making it a crime to sleep in public. Some think fining homeless residents infringes on their Eighth Amendment rights, protecting them from cruel and unusual punishment, while others believe banning sleeping in public will encourage the homeless to seek shelter and treatment facilities.
January 6 and February 6
It is the sixth day of a winter month. An angry, far-right-wing mob, including antisemites, white supremacists, and fascists, has gathered near the nation’s capitol building. They hate the country’s freely-elected, center-left government, which they claim is corrupt and communist. The unruly crowd seems ready to storm the capitol...
Report exposes Christian Nationalist threats to democracy in the U.S.
Report from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) published earlier this week provides a stark and disturbing assessment of the rise of Christian supremacist groups in the U.S. and their increasing influence in right-wing politics. Doing the right thing isn’t on Barr’s agenda – but he’s not alone
Rep. Andy Barr is a hack. He is a busher incapable of hitting above the Mendoza line. He’s the three-year-old learning to ride a tricycle yelling, “Hey daddy! Hey daddy! Look at me,” right before he hits a crack in the sidewalk and lands on his face.
SCOKY: Kulkarni disqualified
The Kentucky Supreme Court on Friday disqualified state Rep. Nima Kulkarni as a Democratic primary candidate less than three weeks after she won the primary. A majority of justices issued the decision Friday, adding that a full ruling will come later. The order was issued one day after the court heard oral arguments from both sides.
Kentucky Republicans help Trump tear down the system
When Mitch McConnell voted not to convict Donald Trump on impeachment for inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection, which he nevertheless blamed on Trump, he excused himself in part by saying “We have a criminal justice system in this country.”. The Senate Republican leader was surely not thinking about the...
Ohio gives $2 billion away to private schools. Do we want that for Kentucky?
Way back in the 1990s, the Cleveland Public Schools embarked on a new program to provide vouchers that would allow low-income and students of color to attend private schools. Since that time, the idea of public dollars used to subsidize private school attendance skyrocketed. Today, Ohio is one of 11 states that offers what’s known as universal voucher programs, meaning they are given to all but the very richest families.
In honor of my father on this day
June 6, 2024. For some, just another day. But for those of us with a direct connection to the Greatest Generation, it’s a day of remembrance and reflection. Eighty years ago this morning, a 20-year-old Bill Maples went ashore on D-Day. As a medic. Just sit with that for...
New Federal rule tightens black lung regs, but KY laws make diagnosis harder
Dr. David Blackley came back to his alma mater, East Tennessee State University, with a warning. My old Sunday School teacher, and 80 years ago
I’m thinking about my old Sunday School teacher. On June 6, 1944, First Lt. Frank Kolb of the Army’s First Infantry Division sprang from a landing craft on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. The Paducah native was one of about 160,000 Allied troops, mostly British, American, Canadian, and Free French, who spearheaded the largest air and sea invasion in the history of warfare.
The whiny 77-year-old toddler
The best way to fight this constant MAGA bleating about everything being rigged is to point out that this has been Donald Trump’s default mode his whole life. What a freaking crybaby!. Before Donald Trump disgraced America by entering politics, he was disgracing America with a terrible TV show....
