Project 2025 is coming for your union
“Have you heard about Project 2025?” Robert Reich asks in a follow up fund-raising email from Inequality Media Civic Action. “If not, you might want to sit down before reading the rest of this email — because frankly, it’s terrifying.”. Added Reich: “Project 2025 is a...
JCPS task force ignores obvious meaning of open meetings law
”Times and places convenient to the public” is a legal fiction to Kentucky lawmakers. Courier Journal columnist Joe Gerth channels the letter and spirit of the open meetings law in his analysis of the decision of the legislative task force examining the future of the Jefferson County Public Schools to conduct its meetings at times that effectively exclude large swaths of the public affected by the task force’s charter and in a place some 50 miles from Jefferson County.
AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler responds to Trump vice president announcement
Donald Trump has a miserable record of breaking every promise he’s made to working people – from failing to pay his workers and crossing a picket line to his disastrous four years in the White House. That betrayal would continue if he is re-elected – so it’s no surprise Trump chose a vice president who will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for that anti-worker vision.

Some new Kentucky laws are in limbo as governor says lawmakers failed to fund them
Kentucky legislators enacted more than 200 laws this year, most of which take effect today, July 15. At least 20 new laws are in limbo, however. Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear says the Republican-controlled General Assembly failed to fund them — to the tune of $153 million — even after he informed lawmakers of the problem on April 10.

Biden condemns attack, while MAGAs spin up conspiracies and ignore their own calls for violence
President Joe Biden lost no time condemning the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, and even phoned him. “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania,” Biden said in a statement. “I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”

‘Unfit to rule a free people’
“In a rational nation it would be impossible to conceive of Donald Trump even being allowed to peer in the general direction of the White House,” wrote Northern Kentucky Tribune columnist and Kentucky Journalism Hall of Famer Bill Straub. “He is a rapist, a pathological liar, a cheat who refuses to pay his bills, a man who enriched himself and his family during his time in office and instigated an insurrection against the United States in an effort to retain the presidency. He was found guilty on 34 felony counts in a New York state court of falsifying business records to gain a political advantage.

Red, White, and Kryptonite part 4: Christian Nationalist threat to library defeated
A closing story about activism in action, by Leslie McColgin. Struggles to protect our democracy and basic liberties are happening all over our country, and public libraries are one of the targets. Nicole Wallace asked Timothy Snyder the other day how the media could do better, and his response included making sure to report on and shine a spotlight every time there is success in pushing back against these forces that are leading us to fascism and Christian Nationalism. Any time we have a success, we need to shout it from the rooftops and beat back the cynicism and despair that can so easily take hold as we have so many battles to fight right now. Every local battle where this threat is successfully addressed can give us strength to sustain the fight.

‘Krishna, Krishna’ at graduation
Every school has a Ron Kaufman. A nonconformist slacker kid who doesn’t care if the school’s admin likes him or not. He’s in the school band or maybe in chorus or maybe one of the lesser sports. Or maybe he’s not in any after-school program at all. A very mellow dude. And for $50 or $100, he’d be happy to promote the First Amendment protection against the establishment of religion. Through prayer. A Hindu prayer.
