JOPLIN, MO — We have reached that time of the year, where football is back and today the Missouri Southern Lions put on the helmets to start gearing up for the 2024 season.

The juices were flowing. The energy was high and the MOSO Lions were glad to be back on the gridiron.

MSSU Redshirt Senior Tight End Deontay Campbell said, “It’s good to be back, man. Feels good to be back with my brothers, you know, ready to get to work. We know what our goal is. We know we work for for all summer. So now just trying to put the pieces together and get to it”.

The Lions are coming off a 5-6 season in 2023, but there are a lot of high hopes and expectations with strong core pieces returning on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

As the Lions prepare for their first game, it’s all about making sure each guy is preparing himself on and off the field to help the team.

MSSU Senior Running Back Nathan Glades said, “We gotta study. We gotta get in the film. We got to get in the playbooks. We got to make sure that we know every single detail that we need to know about our own offense. And that also goes for the defense. They need to get in there and make sure they’re doing the same thing. The biggest thing is we really need to make sure that we discipline ourselves on special teams”.

From the spring to the fall, Head Coach Atiba Bradley has seen his guys continue to buy into the mindset of creating a winning culture he and the coaching staff are building here at Southern.

MSSU Head Coach Atiba Bradley said, “I think it’s been just continuing, I felt like going into last year and even ending last year, we had this incredible buy in and I just keep seeing it increasing every day. These guys continue to do more and more and pour more into the program. And they’re always asking, how can we get better? What more can we do? And it’s a testament to our senior leadership. It’s a testament to our coaches. And, we’re happy with where we’re at right now”.

Coach Bradley says the biggest thing right now is cohesion and getting those final details in before their first official game.

Their first game will be August 29th when they travel to take on Midwestern State with game time set for 7:00 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas.
