Even after posting a quality 34-18 record last season, the Pittsburg State Baseball is always looking to improve, and that starts with recruiting.

The Gorillas hosted a prospect camp for local high school and junior college talent looking to advance their athletic careers. While the Gorillas certainly will look to sign the top athletes under their consideration, other local coaches were in attendance as well.

Pittsburg State head coach Bob Fornelli said the goal of the camp was to ensure each athlete was provided with an opportunity, even if that opportunity isn’t with the Gorillas.

“The one thing about college baseball, there’s a lot of colleges around the country that play baseball,” Fornelli said. “Every every player doesn’t get to go to exactly where they want to go. They’ve got to go to where somebody wants them. And these guys are getting opportunities to see if this is the right place, if now will help them get to the next place and and hopefully go on and get a great college degree and go on and be successful in life.”

In the blistering heat, the athletes in attendance participated in 17-inning games in order to provide each pitcher a chance to get on the mound, and each position player a chance to get some live at-bats in front of coaches.

There is quite some time before the 2025 MIAA baseball calendar gets underway, but Pittsburg State is getting ahead of the curve in the recruiting game.

The Gorillas’ 2025 schedule is yet to release, but the season will expectedly begin in February.
