2024 HS Football Previews: Miami Wardogs

MIAMI, OK — Miami Wardogs head coach Zach Gardner is credited with turning the football program around as his group eyes another playoff appearance in 2024.

The strength for the Wardogs will be in their offensive line. Three of the five starters in the trenches for Miami have received offers to compete at the next level. Center Hayden Miller will be a leader for the Wardogs up front, as he looks to anchor a very strong unit this season.

“This group’s been together since fifth grade,” said Miller.

“We all just want to go make a run in the playoffs. We made it the last two years, but we didn’t get the job done. I feel things will change this season.”

Joining Miller up front will be Zander Clark, Josiah Barley, Tanner Searcy, and David Snider. With a strong senior class on the line and around the team, head coach Zach Gardner said experience will play a big role this year.

“All of our leaders have had game experience at the varsity level since their freshman year,” said Gardner.

“You’re talking about some four-year starters going into game 40 of their high school career at some point this season. These guys have had so much experience and it’s really going to end up paying off.”

Sam Lillard returns as quarterback for the Wardogs. When discussing his group, he said it’s on the older athletes to set an example for the younger ones.

“We’re in here day in and day out,” said Lillard.

“We’re working really hard, and we need to set an example for some of the younger guys too.”

Miami will host Elkins at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 30th at 7 p.m.
