PITTSBURG, KS — Pitt State football opens its season at home against No. 3 Ferris State on Saturday.

The Gorillas enter the year following an 11-2 record last season, earning them a No. 6 ranking in the preseason poll.

With a top-10 matchup set to take place at Carnie Smith Stadium, Tom Anthony will make his debut as head coach for the Gorillas.

“When you have the opportunity to get this game scheduled, I jumped at it,” said Anthony.

“I know Ferris State is excited to come down here and experience this too, and people can’t wait to experience this atmosphere.”

The Gorillas return 13 starters, several of which were all-MIAA from last season. One of last year’s starters for the Gorillas, linebacker Alex Gaskill, said this game will set the tone for the rest of the season.

“This will definitely be a tone setter for the rest of the season,” said Gaskill.

“I think it all has to do with how much we prepared, and how focused we’ve been throughout the week. I think we feel very confident of where we are, but we know we have a tough opponent and we’ll have our hands full come Saturday.”

Redshirt senior running back Noah Hernandez will be the leader of what looks to be a strong ground game this season for Pitt State. When asked about Ferris State’s defense, Hernandez said the Bulldogs have plenty of experience.

“Their guys are really stout,” said Hernandez.

“Their front seven even got a linebacker that just came back — just vet guys that have been in the program for a long time and have made a lot of plays the last few years. We know they’re coming in ready to play for sure.”

The Gorillas will host Ferris State on Saturday, August 31st at 7 p.m.
