PITTSBURG, KS – The Gorillas took down No. 3 Ferris State in the season opener 19-3. Pitt State head coach Tom Anthony also secured his first career win at the helm on Saturday night.

In a game built on defense, the two teams traded field goals before the half. Pitt garnered four sacks on the night, and forced four turnovers on the defensive side. Linebacker Alex Gaskill and safety Ryan Medeiros were both credited with interceptions in the first half. Despite the short field, beating out Ferris State’s defense proved to be a tough task. The Bulldogs held the Gorillas to just six points before halftime, but Pitt would open up the offense in the second half.

On a five play, 37-yard drive, Cleo Chandler punched in the first touchdown of the night for both squads. Chandler capped off his 51-yard night with a late third quarter touchdown that widened the lead for the Gorillas. Later, kicker Austin Schmitt hit a late fourth quarter field goal that made the deficit insurmountable for the Bulldogs, as quarterback Chad Dodson kneeled the clock out to seal the game.

Up next, Pitt State travels to take on Missouri Southern on Saturday, September 7th at 7 p.m.
