PITTSBURG, KS — Pitt State football kicks off its second week against an old conference rival, Missouri Southern. The No. 3 ranked Gorillas come of a 19-3 win against Ferris State last Saturday.

Looking ahead to the Miners Bowl against the Lions, Pitt State has fared well in the series. The Gorillas are 45-9-1 in head to head play against the Lions. When the two teams met last season, the running game proved to be the strongest asset for Pitt State.

The Gorillas scored three combined touchdowns from running backs: Antwan Squire, Noah Hernandez, and Cleo Chandler.

While Pitt State holds a strong series advantage, coach Anthony and his players say facing Missouri Southern will be a very tough task.

“We’ve got a bunch of playmakers on offense, so we’re just trying to figure out different ways to get those guys the ball in their hands,” said redshirt senior wide receiver Jack Roberts.

Redshirt junior linebacker Zach Coenen commented on the physicality of Missouri Southern’s offense.

“Missouri Southern prides themselves on being really physical and stuff,” said Coenen. “We expect the same kind of dogfight, but we’re going to get their best game and that’s the way we want it.”

Gorillas head coach Tom Anthony complimented the Lions ability to prevent negative yardage plays, and how well the team can execute.

“They don’t give up sacks, and there’s not a lot of negative yardage plays because they execute so well offensively,” said Anthony. I think the quarterback just does a phenomenal job of knowing when to get rid of the football, so it will be a big challenge for us on Saturday night.”

The Gorillas will travel to take on Missouri Southern at Fred G. Hughes Stadium on Saturday, September 7th at 7 p.m.
