PARSONS, KS — The Parsons Vikings are fresh off the best season in head coach Jeff Schibi’s tenure, posting a 9-2 record and making a state quarterfinals appearance in 2023.

The Vikings will look to carry that momentum into a new season, but this time around the players and coaches will be playing for something more than just wins and losses.

Parsons has dedicated its season to honor the life of JahMarcus Washington, the class of 2025 WR/CB that tragically passed away in June.

“From now on, everything we do will be for JahMarcus and we’re going to go to the state for JahMarcus,” said Trey Logan, senior QB. “And like every time we break a huddle, we do it for JahMarcus. Everything we do in practice, we go hard for JahMarcus. Everything is for JahMarcus, for real.”

“Everything we do is for him,” said Jason Smart, senior WR/CB. “Like no matter if it’s just breaking the huddle, going out there, playing our games, everything we do is for JahMarcus. He would have wanted us to come out here and do our best and we’re going to do our best for him.”

Aside from the emotional motivation to succeed in honor of the Vikings’ beloved teammate and friend, Parsons has a legitimate chance of furthering their postseason success from a year ago.

The defense remains relatively the same as last season, but the offense will have a new look led by senior QB Trey Logan.

With expectations for the program on the rise, Schibi believes it is important for his group to stay mentally disciplined.

“One thing we’ve been preaching to our kids this year is whatever happened last year doesn’t really matter on our on our results this year,” Schibi said. “No one is going to just lay over just because we had a good season last year. So we got to continue to work hard every single day.”

The Vikings kickoff their 2024 regular season this Friday, September 6 with a matchup against Labette County. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
