PITTSBURG, KS — Pittsburg State women’s soccer is enjoying success early in their inaugural season with a 3-0 record after today’s 1-0 win over East Central University.

Today marked the Gorillas first home game in the existence of the women’s soccer program, and Pittsburg State certainly didn’t disappoint the home crowd.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle that saw each side post seven shot attempts with several chances created along the way.

Things opened up for the Gorillas in the second half, primarily on the attack. The 0-0 deadlock was broken in the 70th minute by Madison Monson, who received McKenna Robinson’s cross in the box and fired a rocket into the back of the net.

Monson’s strike marked the first ever home goal in Pittsburg State women’s soccer history.

Head coach Wes Branstetter said emotions were high on the sideline after seeing Monson give the Gorillas the lead.

“Sometimes I’ll go crazy [when we score], but I kind of just sat there in the moment and I just watched the fans and just kind of soaked that in because that’s the great moment for them and just kind of seeing how they reacted and how they celebrate it,” Branstetter said. “Because it’s a culmination of a lot of things that they’ve worked on together. And I think we’ve been together for a month, and to start 3-0 is just unbelievable.”

For a program that essentially was started from scratch, it’s mighty impressive to see the Gorillas begin the year unbeaten, beating out opponents 8-2 on aggregate through three games.

The Gorillas are back in action on Saturday, September 14 against Southern Nazarene.
