FRONTENAC, KS – The Pittsburg Purple Dragons took on the Riverton Rams in one of their many games during the Frontenac Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Saturday, September 14th.

The 12 teams that participated in the tournament were Frontenac, Chanute, Columbus, Jasper, Louisburg, Fort Scott, Cherryvale, St. Mary’s Colgan, Pittsburg, Riverton, Girard, and Liberal.

Starting off on court one, sparking some offense for the Purple Dragons was Alycia Cosense. She timed up a set from Heather Mowdy perfectly to secure the early Pittsburg point.

Continuing the offensive momentum was Mowdy again. She would set up Ivery Watts who went on to spike one down for an emphatic finish.

After some early Pittsburg offense, the Rams started to get into a rhythm of their own.

Avery Barnett elevated off the set from Ava price as Riverton started to go on a roll.

Keeping the offense going was Rilyn Thomasson. It all started with a bump from Alexa Price over to Landyn Martin. Martin sent it over to Thomasson for another Rams score.

However, the Rams roll was not enough to hold off the Purple Dragons down the stretch as Onna Jorge came up with a huge block to end the first set.

Pittsburg went on to win 2-0. Set 1 consisted of a close 25-23 back and forth battle, while Set 2’s final score was 25-18.

Capping off the tournament on the day Chanute went on to win the Consolation Bracket, as Louisburg captured the Gold Bracket Championship.
