TOPEKA, KS — The Pittsburg State Gorillas entered Saturday’s contest looking to bounce back coming off a loss to Emporia State, and the matchup with the Ichabods delivered several exciting moments.

The offense was clicking in this one thanks to a solid 20-for-33, 287 yards, and two touchdown performance by quarterback Chad Dodson Jr.

He connected with Jack Roberts less than 90 seconds into the game, delivering a dime after scrambling away from pressure in the pocket.

His second TD also came in the first quarter, with a huge play down the sidelines to his speedy receiver Christian Carter for a 78-yard score.

While the Gorillas’ offense was clicking early, Washburn put up a fight all throughout this one. The Ichabods had a kick-return TD and long, breakaway passing TD of their own in the first half to keep things close.

Just as things appeared as if Pittsburg State might pull away, the Ichabods had a 92-yard punt return touchdown. Their second special teams score of the contest.

Even with some pesky special teams plays not going their way, the Gorillas defense made big plays when it mattered most.

Up by one point in the final minutes of the 4th quarter, Pittsburg State forced a fumble on the one-yard line to prevent a Washburn go-ahead score and set up their offense for a crucial late-game drive.

Pittsburg State would go on to capitalize off the turnover with a 6:49 drive that ended with a Luke Niggemann rushing touchdown to essentially seal the deal for the Gorillas.

When it was all said and done, Pittsburg State came out on top 39-31. The Gorillas enter their upcoming bye week with that winning feeling fresh on their minds.
