CARTHAGE, MO — The Carthage Tigers improve to 5-1 on the season after a thrilling 23-20 overtime win against Joplin.

The Tigers’ run game stole the show in this one, opening the game with a 10-minute drive. Neither team found the end zone on their first attempt, but the offenses got going in the second quarter.

Carthage opened the scoring with a short pass by QB Brady Carlton to Karson Murray to take a 7-0 lead.

Joplin immediately responded with a beautifully placed ball by QB Daniel Rose to the Eagles’ playmaker Davin Thomas for a near 40-yard touchdown.

Carthage again would find the end zone the very next drive, with Jackson Hettinger crossing the goal line this time around off a jet sweep run.

The scoring stalled in the second half as this matchup ended up heading to overtime tied 17-17.

Joplin tacked on a field goal on their opening drive of overtime, but Carthage sealed the victory with a three-yard Landyn Collins touchdown run.

With the loss, Joplin moves to 3-3 and will face Neosho next time out. Carthage on the other hand will be facing Republic next week. Both games are slated for October 11 with kickoff at 7 p.m.
