GRANBY, Mo. — A 10-year-old Granby boy is dead after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bike.

It happened just before 5:30 last evening on Cole Street. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cooper Deshields was riding his bicycle, didn’t stop at a stop sign, and rode into the path of a pickup truck driven by John Mehrens, 74, of Neosho.

Deshields was pronounced dead at the scene. Mehrens was not injured.

East Newton Schools Superintendent Scott Charlton confirmed Deshields was a 5th grader at Granby Elementary. Charlton said the district has made counselors available to staff and students, and the Neosho School District also sent counselors to Granby. He said the district also has access to a therapy dog for the day.
