CARTHAGE, Mo. — An area animal shelter won’t accept pets for the next 30 days because they’re already at capacity.

“We’re pretty much down to the wire,” said Amy Anderson, Carthage Humane Society Director.

    200 animals.

The Carthage Humane Society announced Friday the facility is at max capacity – leading to a pause in taking in any more animals.

“We have been struggling financially for a while. We’ve been doing the best fundraising we could, but unfortunately, it’s not enough to cover our monthly overhead. So we had to make some difficult decisions while we continue to fundraise,” said Anderson.

Carthage Humane Society Director, Amy Anderson, says even with continued help from the community and city, it’s still expensive to take care of so many animals.

“It just depends on how long it takes for that animal to be adopted. And so that entire time we’re feeding, housing and providing medical care to those animals,” said Anderson.

That’s also what led to the pause.

“We have to be realistic. And during our effort to stay open, we want to make sure that we’re not incurring any further costs and we want to make sure that these animals are taken care of to the best of our ability,” said Anderson.

    For the next 30 – they’re on a mission.

“Get these animals rehomed, adopted out in the foster care system, or we will actually have them sent out to other shelters and rescues,” said Anderson.

While the board continues fundraising efforts – flyers will be sent out to those who have previously adopted.

“It really is my absolute passion that I’m going to be working hard every day to keep our doors open. That is the goal. I do not want to close our doors,” said Anderson.
