PITTSBURG, Kan. — Today was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

It’s a day that encourages safe practices and designates locations for the disposal of unused medications.

The Pittsburg Police Department serves as one of many local drop-off locations in the Four States.

Officials say throwing medication in your trash creates multiple dangers and is bad for the environment.

When medication ends up in landfills, the chemicals seep into the soil and ultimately end up in streams and rivers.

If somebody rummages through your trash cans and dumpsters, these meds could end up in the wrong hands.

Creating a potential for consumption that could be deadly.

“Well you never know what might interact with somebody’s body, including any type of an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety pill. You would think that would not be a big deal, however, they do interact with other chemicals in people’s bodies or other types of prescription pills,” said Sgt. Detective LaMour Romine, Pittsburg PD.

A reminder, Pittsburg and Joplin Police Departments have a drop-box located inside their lobbies for the public to safely drop off unwanted medications at any time.
