FOWLER, Kan. (KSNW) — The City of Fowler says water service has been restored in Fowler.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the town in Meade County. It will remain in effect throughout the weekend.

Earlier in the day, the City shut off water service to Folwer.

“The water will be shut off immediately!” the City announced on social media. “There was a water main broken! Sorry for the short notice. Repairs have been started. The Fowler City Hall will keep you posted.”

The KDHE boil water advisory issue was announced a short time later. It remains in effect until testing shows the water is safe to consume.

The city expects the advisory to remain in place through the weekend. The KDHE says water main breaks cause a loss in pressure, which can mean a loss of chlorine residuals, leading to bacterial contamination.

They urge Fowler residents to follow these guidelines:

    • Boil water for one minute before drinking it or using it in food preparation, or use bottled water.
    • Dispose of ice cubes, and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
    • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
    • Disinfect dishes and other surfaces that come into contact with food by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water containing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
    • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. However, children must be supervised while bathing to prevent water from being ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
