FOWLERVILLEFowlerville Junior High will see a familiar face take over as principal in August.

Dana Coon has been tapped for the role, pending board approval next month. Coon most recently served as assistant principal at Smith Elementary. She has 14 years of experience teaching sixth grade and additional experience working with seventh and eighth graders.

Coon has spent the last nine years with Fowlerville Community Schools. Before that, she was a middle school teacher in Webberville.

Coon fondly remembers her time teaching middle schoolers, and felt the move would help her return to her roots.

“As we know, the needs of students are constantly evolving and changing, and I want to be a part of helping them,” Coon said. “I loved working with kids at that age level. They have a great sense of humor. They love it when you’re honest with them.”

The hire was an obvious choice for the district, given Coon’s background and familiarity, according to FCS Superintendent Matt Stuard.

"(Coon's) outstanding contributions at Smith Elementary have left a lasting impact, and we are confident she will bring the same level of passion and excellence to Fowlerville Junior High School,” Stuard wrote in a statement.

All three of Coon's children attended FCS.

“We live here, our kids have gone through the school here,” Coon said. “It’s a great opportunity and I’m looking forward to working with the staff.”

While administrators report to school Aug. 1, Coon may not start until the second week of the month. She has a good reason, though. Her son and Fowlerville High School graduate Adam Coon will be participating in the Summer Olympics in Paris as a heavyweight wrestler.

“There’s a lot to be excited about,” she said.
